the accite target list

A good target list consists of one part insight and one part structured information.

To create the best target list, we believe three people need to be involved.  The ultimate client should be consulted to provide their recommendations and the consultant should have ideas of their own.  The researcher should be able to add to this through their own knowledge and use of appropriate data sources.

The composition of a thorough target list for a functional position such as a Finance Director or HR Head would take the following form:

1)    The consultant and client discuss at both a specific and a broad level where they envisage sourcing candidates.

2)    The researcher adds to this through the use of their own market knowledge, experience and relevant industry directories.

3)    The consultant presents the target list to the client for mutual agreement, discusses any other additions and gains sign off.

The method outlined above is, of course very much dependent on the nature of the assignment.  This particular process is most relevant to a generalist or function specific search process. Many vertical specific search consultants that have been hired specifically for their market knowledge will have little problem providing their own definitive target list.

Whilst the target list provides a starting point and needs to be comprehensively researched, lateral thought and creativity remain central to providing effective research.  The right candidate will often arrive indirectly from recommendations made by potential candidates identified on the target list.  Alternatively, they may have been found as a result of social network profiles identifying where they’ve worked in the past.
